‘Ruth’ explores a relationship, in which the woman is very sexually driven. Her sexual desire is a considerable part of her identity and encapsulates her need to express herself on an emotional and physical level. The man in this relationship lives in a prison of uncertainty. His misguided preconceptions of masculinity, and his inability to understand it, leave him engaging with her from a position of fear. To him, her openness challenges and steals his perceived masculinity. Whilst he seeks control, in reality he is vulnerable and fragile, unknowing of his worth.
Ruth seeks to be sexually desired. For her, this is the path to the freedom she craves. But like so many in this world, she is suffocated by an atmosphere of misplaced and misunderstood masculinity.
